45. Write a paragraph of 100 to 150 words, saying what conditions were like in mines at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
In the beginning of the nineteenth century, the condition of both mine and miners was worse. Everything had to be done by manpower. Coal was dug by men and carried out by women and children. Later on steam power was introduced and it was easy to bring out the mines. The condition of miners was also very bad. They were completely exploited by mine owners. They had to do whatever the owners wanted. Mine owners were very powerful. They could reduce the salary of miners and made them work for a long time if they wanted. They made children do work in the mines as long as they liked. They weren’t given time for their food also. If they became united and fought against the owners, they would be arrested and put into jail. Their lives depended on the desire of owners.
