Critical thinking

a. Have you made your own precept after you read this lesson? What is it? Share it with your friends.

"In every adversity lies an opportunity for growth and resilience."

This precept has been the guiding light of my life, reminding me to view challenges as stepping stones rather than stumbling blocks. Throughout my journey, I have encountered various trials and tribulations, but I firmly believe that within each difficult situation, there exists a chance for personal development and strength.

This precept encourages me to embrace difficulties with a positive and proactive mindset. Instead of succumbing to despair when faced with obstacles, I seek to understand the lessons they offer. Adversity has taught me the value of perseverance, adaptability, and self-belief. Each setback becomes an opportunity to reassess my approach, learn from mistakes, and forge ahead with renewed determination.

This principle also inspires me to maintain optimism and hope during trying times. By recognizing that every challenge carries seeds of growth, I find solace even in the darkest moments. I remind myself that difficulties are temporary and that the pursuit of personal growth can transform them into catalysts for positive change.

Throughout my life, this precept has played a pivotal role in shaping my resilience. It has allowed me to approach life's uncertainties with courage and grace. Rather than fearing failure, I embrace it as a necessary part of the learning process. This mindset has fueled my pursuit of knowledge and personal development, allowing me to explore uncharted territories and realize my potential.

In sharing this precept with others, I hope to inspire them to confront challenges with optimism and tenacity. Life may not always follow a smooth path, but by adopting this philosophy, we can navigate the bumps with resilience and determination. I encourage others to see every difficulty as a hidden opportunity for growth and self-improvement. In doing so, we unlock our true potential and become architects of our destiny.

b. According to Josh Lanyon, “If there was one life skill everyone on the planet needed, it was the ability to think with critical objectivity.” Justify this statement with your logic.

The ability to think with critical objectivity is indeed a crucial life skill that is universally valuable for every individual on the planet. Critical objectivity refers to the capacity to analyze information, ideas, and situations objectively, without being influenced by personal biases, emotions, or external pressures. Justifying this statement requires an understanding of the key reasons why critical objectivity is essential for personal and societal development.

Critical objectivity enables individuals to make well-informed and rational decisions. By considering evidence, examining various perspectives, and evaluating potential consequences, people can make choices that are more likely to lead to positive outcomes and avoid hasty or emotionally driven decisions. When faced with challenges, critical objectivity helps people approach problem-solving systematically. They can break down complex issues, identify underlying causes, and develop effective strategies to address them, fostering innovation and progress.

In the digital age, we are bombarded with vast amounts of information daily. Critical objectivity allows individuals to discern reliable sources from misinformation and to question and verify information before accepting it as true. Embracing critical objectivity encourages open-mindedness and tolerance towards differing viewpoints. It promotes healthy debates and discussions, leading to intellectual growth and a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives.

By cultivating critical objectivity, individuals become less susceptible to manipulation and propaganda. They can form their opinions based on logical reasoning and evidence rather than being swayed by emotional appeals or societal pressures. Critical objectivity enhances communication skills as people learn to present their ideas and arguments coherently and persuasively. It also promotes active listening and constructive dialogue, leading to better interpersonal relationships.

A population that can think critically and objectively is better equipped to participate responsibly in democratic processes. Informed citizens are essential for a functioning democracy, as they can assess political agendas and make informed choices during elections. Critical objectivity prepares individuals to adapt to the ever-changing world. In a rapidly evolving society, the ability to critically analyze new information and embrace innovation becomes essential for personal and professional growth.

In conclusion, critical objectivity is a foundational life skill that empowers individuals to make informed decisions, solve problems effectively, and navigate the complexities of the world with intellectual independence. It is not limited to any particular profession, age group, or culture; rather, it is universally relevant and indispensable for personal growth, societal progress, and global harmony. The cultivation of critical objectivity lays the groundwork for a more enlightened, equitable, and resilient world.

Subject: An Engaging Class Experience!

Dear dhurba,

I hope this email finds you well and in good spirits! I couldn't wait to share the excitement of my last English class with you – it was nothing short of incredible!

Our English teacher, Mrs. Johnson, always manages to make literature come alive, but this time, she outdid herself. The topic of the day was Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," a play that I thought I knew inside out. However, Mrs. Johnson had a surprise in store for us.

She had arranged a unique interactive session that transported us back to the 16th century, the era when the play was written. We were each assigned a character, and the classroom was transformed into the streets of Verona. I became Juliet, and my best friend Mark was Romeo – you can imagine the hilarity of our roles!

We engaged in a mock dialogue, capturing the essence of the characters' emotions and language. Mrs. Johnson's encouragement and guidance made us immerse ourselves fully into the personas, which resulted in an intense and passionate exchange of lines between the "star-crossed lovers." It was like living the play, experiencing the tragedy and romance firsthand.

The interactive experience not only made the story memorable but also deepened our understanding of the characters and their motivations. We discussed the societal norms, customs, and the complexities of Shakespearean language, all while staying in character. It was both intellectually stimulating and incredibly fun!

I must say, I have never seen my classmates so engaged and enthusiastic during an English class. We were laughing, crying, and truly feeling connected to the literary masterpiece. It was an unforgettable experience, and we all left the class feeling inspired and eager to explore more of Shakespeare's works.

I can't wait for you to join us in our next English class and share this exciting learning journey with you. Trust me, it's an experience you wouldn't want to miss!

Looking forward to catching up soon!

Warm regards,

Renu

Extra Question

1. Read the POEM and answer the questions.                      [15]

Breathes there the man, with soul so dead,

Who never to himself hath said,

“This is my own, my native land!”

Whose heart hath never within him buried?

As home his foot steps he hath turn’d.

From wandering on a foreign strand!

If such there breathe, go mark him well;

For him no minstrel raptures swell,

High though his title, proud his name

Boundless his wealth as wish can claim,

Despite those titles, power and pelf.

The wretch concentrated all in self.

Living, shall forfeit fair renown,

And doubly dying shall go down,

To the vile dust from where he sprung,

Unwept, unhonour’d and unsung.

                   Sir Walter Scott
