Irony | Literary Term | English Literature | Major English | Plus Two Level
Irony
is a literary term referring to how a person, situation, statement, or
circumstance is not as it would actually seem. Many times it is the exact
opposite of what it appears to be. The definition of irony as a literary device
is a situation in which there is a contrast between expectation and reality. It
is a figure of speech in which words are used in such a way that
their intended meaning is different from the actual meaning of the words. It
may also be a situation that ends up in quite a different way than what is
generally anticipated. In simple words, it is a difference between appearance
and reality. Irony is associated with both tragedy and humor.
