An
image is often explained as a picture evoked in the mind by words. However,
besides being visual, an image can be olfactory, gustatory, tactile, or
auditory. Am image need not be like that of a still photograph only; it can
also be kinesthetic or abstract. Basically, an image can be literal,
perceptual, or conceptual. In other word, image is a word or phrase in a
literary text that appeals directly to the reader's taste, touch, hearing,
sight, or smell. An image is thus any vivid or picturesque phrase that evokes a
particular sensation in the reader's mind.
For
example: While someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully
along are literal images.
