CRITICAL THINKING
a. CV may not represent a person’s skills and abilities accurately
because one’s confidence cannot be rendered in a paper. What do you think the
employers should do to find the best people for the job?
It's
absolutely right that a CV may not always represent a person's skills and
abilities accurately, as it cannot fully capture a candidate's confidence, soft
skills, and other intangible qualities. To find the best people for the job,
employers should consider adopting a more holistic and inclusive hiring
approach. Here are some strategies that can help identify the most suitable
candidates:
Conduct
structured interviews that focus on behavioral and situational questions. This
approach allows employers to assess how candidates handle real-life scenarios,
problem-solving abilities, and their interpersonal skills. Implement skill
assessments or practical tests relevant to the job position. These assessments
can be tailored to evaluate a candidate's actual proficiency in the required
tasks, providing a more accurate measure of their abilities.
Request
candidates to provide work samples or portfolios showcasing their previous
projects or achievements. This tangible evidence can give employers insights
into the candidate's capabilities and the quality of their work. Thoroughly
check the references provided by candidates to gain a better understanding of
their past performance and work ethic. Input from previous employers and
colleagues can shed light on a candidate's suitability for the role.
Utilize
behavioral assessments and personality tests, which can offer valuable insights
into a candidate's work style, communication, and collaboration preferences. Consider
offering candidates a trial period or internship before committing to a
permanent hire. This allows employers to observe a candidate's performance in a
real work environment and assess their fit with the team and company culture. Prioritize
diversity and inclusion in the hiring process. Building diverse teams with varied
perspectives can lead to better problem-solving and creativity.
Conduct
panel interviews with multiple interviewers from different departments. This
can provide a more comprehensive evaluation of a candidate's suitability and
help avoid potential biases. Pay attention to a candidate's soft skills, such
as communication, adaptability, and teamwork. These qualities are often crucial
for success in any role. Encourage employee referrals, as current employees can
often provide valuable insights into potential candidates' capabilities and
cultural fit.
By
incorporating these strategies into the hiring process, employers can enhance
their chances of finding the best people for the job and create a workforce
that is not only skilled but also aligned with the company's values and
culture.
b. If the employers provide job opportunity by assessing one’s CV,
how can fresh graduates compete with the experienced competitors?
Fresh
graduates may find it challenging to compete with experienced candidates when
employers primarily rely on CV assessments. However, there are several
strategies that fresh graduates can employ to enhance their chances of standing
out in the job market.
Fresh
graduates should focus on showcasing their relevant skills and educational achievements
prominently on their CV. Emphasize any internships, volunteer work, or projects
completed during studies that are relevant to the job they are applying for. Customize
the CV for each job application to align with the specific requirements of the position.
Research the company and the role, and tailor the CV to emphasize how their
skills and education make them a good fit for the job.
Highlight
any extracurricular activities, leadership roles, or participation in clubs and
organizations that demonstrate valuable soft skills such as teamwork,
communication, and leadership. Even if a fresh graduate lacks direct work
experience, they likely have transferable skills gained from part-time jobs,
academic projects, or other experiences. Showcase how these skills can be
applied to the job they are seeking.
Build
a strong professional network and consider seeking internships or entry-level
positions to gain practical experience and exposure to the industry.
Internships can be an excellent way to demonstrate commitment and willingness
to learn. During the application process and interviews, convey enthusiasm for
the role and a strong willingness to learn and grow in the position. Employers
value candidates who are motivated and eager to contribute.
Showcase
a commitment to continuous learning by pursuing relevant certifications or
online courses that enhance skills and knowledge in their chosen field. Craft a
compelling cover letter that goes beyond the CV, expressing passion for the
industry, the company, and the role. A well-written cover letter can help a
candidate stand out and make a strong impression.
Engage
in volunteer work or take up freelance projects related to their field of
interest. This can help build practical experience and a portfolio to showcase
to potential employers. Reach out to mentors or career advisors for guidance on
job applications, interview techniques, and career development.
While
experienced candidates may have an edge in certain aspects, fresh graduates can
differentiate themselves by highlighting their unique strengths, willingness to
learn, and passion for the field. By proactively seeking opportunities for
growth and demonstrating their value through the application process, fresh
graduates can increase their competitiveness in the job market.

Silas
Minton’s funeral was a quiet affair. It was attended by the only relations he
had in the world, his niece and nephew, and by a few friends. The priest who
had traveled over a hundred miles into this wild part of the country was now
getting ready for the simple ceremony. Minton or ‘Minty’ as his friends used
to call him, had led a hard life looking for gold in a lonely part of Western
Australia. He had always refused to work in a gold mine because he believed
that he could do better on his own. Although he was not a boastful person, he
had often declared that one day he would find a lump of gold as big as his
head and with that he would retire and live in comfort for the rest of his
life. But his dreams of great wealth never came true. For many years he had
hardly earned enough money to keep himself alive. Two
men now gently lifted the rough wooden box that contained Minty’s body but
they almost dropped it when they heard a loud cry from the grave-digger. His
spade had struck something hard in the rocky soil and he was shouting excitedly.
Then he held up a large stone. Though it was covered with dirt, the stone
shone curiously in the fierce sunlight: it was unmistakably a heavy piece of
solid gold! |
