Verse | Literary Term | English Literature | Major English | Plus Two Level
A
verse is a metrical line. Sometimes it also means a stanza of a poem or poetry
in general. It is important to note here that the term “verse” is often
incorrectly used for referring to “poetry” in order to differentiate it
from prose. A verse is the basic element of a poem. A verse in a poem has
more importance than a single sentence in a novel because each line in a poem
must carry so much weight to necessitate its inclusion. There are generally two
types of verse, namely free verse and blank verse. A free
verse poem has no set meter; that is to say there is no rhyming
scheme present, and the poem doesn’t follow a set pattern. Blank verse is
written in strict iambic pentameter, but has no rhyme scheme.
