Summary

In the essay 'Gretel' Garrison Keillor has created a transformation (duplicate/modified) text of the 'Hansel and Gretel'. This essay is written from the Gretel's point of view. She expresses her opinion about her brother Hansel, father, step mother and witch.

After their safe arrival, Hansel and Gretel write a book about their experiences. They make agreement to divide the profit by fifty-fifty. But next day, Gretel finds that her brother Hansel and the lawyer have changed the agreement and also twisted the story. Where Hansel has presented as hero and talented boy. And she has a weak sister. They have also presented the father as a kind hearted man. But she says Hansel was a very weak and nervous boy. She consoles him in the jungle and saves him from the witch as well. Their father was not kind hearted rather drunkard, angry and aggressive.

In those famine days children were used to left in the jungle. But, the children were saved by hermits, shepherds and others. So it was not so serious problem. They themselves were able to survive in the jungle too. Now, her brother and father are spending a luxurious life, whereas she has to live in a small narrow rented room. She thinks, it is an injustice to her. She regrets that she kills the witch without thinking.

Yes, I think Gretel represents modern feminist women. It is because she is a strong girl. She supports women's rights and revolts (uprising, rebel) against the male dominated society. She wants to make the women aware and raises the voice against social injustice and inequality. Her brother makes a conspiracy to her. So she revolts against his coward manner and says that males are cruel. She is strong minded and courageous girl like the modern feminist.

3. Who does Gretel feel sorry for?

The feminist, Gretel feels sorry for her step-mother and the witch. She has sympathy towards them. She hates the whole male dominated society and her father and brother. She criticizes the male superiority existing in the society. She regrets that she was unable to understand the witch and her way of thinking. She loves females only. She thinks witch is right to kill the whole male. Now she understands the thoughts of witch and regret towards her murdering.

In this essay "Gretel” she is the main character. She is Cowards Hansel’s sister. She is strong minded, clever, brave and courageous girl. She is and enthusiastic feminist. She is not worried for being abandoned in the jungle. She is very hopeful about her success in life. She is critical, logical, and stands for equal rights and justice. She has learnt so many things from her own experiences. She believes that a woman should raise a voice against injustice. She becomes angry and evaluates that males are very cruel. She is very sympathetic to the condition of woman in the society.
